History

KitchenAid has been around since 1919 and is owned by the Whirlpool corporation. They don’t just make the famous mixers; the company makes everything from cutlery to coffee makers. The electric mixer, originally called the Model H, was created by the Hobart Manufacturing company in 1908.

The original idea for a stand mixer was created by Herbet Johnston who worked for the Hobart Corporation. While we know the mixers under the name KitchenAid today, they were originally referred to as the Model-H. It wasn’t until the release of the 10-quart C-10 model in 1918 that they used the name KitchenAid.

It was not until the 1930s that KitchenAid brought in an industrial designer to spice things up. Egmont Arens redesigned the mixer to have the tilt on the mixer head that they still have today. The mixers were so popular that it was common for them to sell out around the holidays. After the popularity of the mixers, KitchenAid began producing dishwashers. Originally released in silver, KitchenAid mixers got another makeover and colors were added in the 1950s to go with those art deco kitchens. Since then, the mixers have kept a similar style varying in models.

Even though they are expensive today, the original KitchenAid mixers were made to be an affordable option for families in their kitchens. This was the Model K design, and KitchenAid mixers today are still built using a similar design.

How Much is it Going to Cost?

Alright, so these mixers are for sure expensive. Even a standard model will run you around $300. That’s we are looking at used KitchenAid mixers. Another perk of buying used means the mixer was loved and probably used quite a bit. These things are built to last, and if you are buying from a reputable source, you should be getting an excellent product for a lot less than a brand-new mixer.

If you’re looking somewhere like eBay, you may have to sift to find the used ones. New products will be mixed in, as well. Some used KitchenAid mixers can go for as low as $120, depending on what you’re looking for. A standard KitchenAid mixer comes with a 5-quart mixing bowl, and those can run around $250 for a used one. A mini used KitchenAid mixer can run about $100 and has a 3.5-quart bowl.

Generally, you are still going to spend a large chunk of change on a used Kitchen Aid mixer, so make sure you do the research to get the exact one that you want. This isn’t an item that will wear out and you’ll buy another in a few years, it will most likely be with you for the
